Hey summer lovers,
Next week, Art Basel Basel rolls around once again, which means we’re officially counting down to the unofficial end of the art world calendar until things kick off again in September.
How has this time of year come around so quickly? No idea.
Are we already mentally by a pool with a drink in hand? Absolutely.
Today’s post is our ode to summer and what better way to celebrate the season than through one of art history’s most enduring subjects: the bather.
Across centuries, the figure in water has never been as simple as it first appears. Bathers have carried all kinds of meanings, from desire and shame to leisure, class and gender. So, we’re looking back at 10 bathers, from some of the most famous scenes to works by artists grappling with the subject today.
The countdown is on. Cool off, take a dip.
