I do this activity with EVERY new charisma coaching client
I list a range of important qualities in a conversation, such as
Listening
Storytelling
Authenticity
Good questions
Sense of humour
Genuine Curiosity
Common interests
I ask clients to rank these important qualities from most important to least important.
For the record, all of these are important, but I want to know which are most important to YOU.
Guess which 99% of the people I ask rank as number 1?
Go on.. Take a guess..
The answer may shock you 😲
Out of all the people I asked, they ranked:
No.1 = Genuine Curiosity
As the most important factor for a great conversation.
I love this 💖
A fundamental part of being charismatic is being genuinely curious about the other person.
How did they end up where they are?
What’s their opinion on taboo subjects?
What gets them out of bed in the morning?
Why do they care about particular topics?
Being curious about someone is incredibly rewarding and is actually part of human nature.
Albert Einstein once said:
“I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”
There was a study conducted by Ranganath, a psychologist at the University of California found that the human brain retains information better if we’re curious about it.
While this is applied to learning a subject in school, it can also be connected to charismatic traits such as:
Remembering people’s names
Being more present
Active listening
Being engaged in conversations
Ranganath took 19 volunteers and asked them to review more than 100 trivia questions. Questions such as, “What does the term ‘dinosaur’ actually mean?” and “What Beatles single lasted longest on the charts, at 19 weeks?”
He found that when participants’ curiosity was piqued around a question, their pleasure & reward signals in the brain started firing off.
People actually get enjoyment from being curious 🤯
When we are in that state, the chemical dopamine starts firing off, and we retain information better and have better connections with others.
So the number 1 ingredient you need to have better conversations with people is:
Genuine Curiosity
Everyone has a story, and it’s your job as a charismatic person to find out what it is!
Now I am curious about you.
What topics do you love talking about? What would I have to ask you for you to go “oooooohhh.”
Let me know, and we can get the conversation started.
Kind regards
Sebastian from Art of Charisma
