Firefly (Lightning Bug)

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year. Seeing lightning bugs appear in the evening, like little fairies carrying lanterns of golden light, still fills me with joy.

As a child, I would sit patiently on the back porch steps with an empty jar in hand after the sun went down. Most nights I caught twenty or so lightning bugs. Before going to sleep, I would watch them blinking on and off beside my bed, tiny lights dancing in the darkness. In the morning I always released them, only to head back outside the next evening in hopes of catching more. I often wondered if I was catching the same ones.

If a lightning bug appears, it may be an invitation to become inspired. If you’re working on something creative, consider it an encouraging omen. Let your ideas flow, and allow your muse to reveal a new vision. Lightning bug also reminds us not to give up hope and to let our own inner light shine. For me, it carries the energy of the Star card in the Tarot—a symbol of hope, guidance, and quiet faith. Whatever you’re seeking to create or manifest, keep going.

There may also be windows of opportunity opening for you, so be ready when they appear. Pay attention to the people entering your life as well. Notice shared values, familiar patterns, or a sense of kindred spirit. These are often the people who will encourage your journey and, in time, may even begin to feel like family.

Lightning bugs belong to the beetle family, and their flashing light is used to attract a mate. Each species has its own unique rhythm or pattern of flashing, and when the signals match, the male approaches the female. Like all encounters with nature, there’s wisdom to be found by observing an animal’s unique characteristics and behavior.

Take rhythm, for example. It’s essential to the lightning bug’s survival. Applied to our own lives, it reminds us to trust our inner timing rather than forcing life to unfold according to someone else’s schedule. There is wisdom in finding the rhythm that is uniquely your own.

When lightning bug appeared for me, it was completely unexpected. It was early May, well before I would normally expect to see one. I was sitting on the floor meditating. Meditation has long been one of the ways I stay centered, calm, and connected to my Higher Self.

As I visualized the life I hoped to create, I focused on the images through my imagination—one of our greatest creative tools. Suddenly I had the distinct feeling that I wasn’t alone. I opened one eye just a little and saw a single lightning bug resting quietly on the windowsill beside me.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered with delight.

To me, it felt like a gentle sign that something I had been holding in my heart was beginning to move toward manifestation.

Over the years I’ve discovered that it’s not enough to simply wish for something. We also have to take action, even if it’s only a small step in the direction we want to go. Intention and action work together. When we become clear about what we desire and begin moving toward it, life often has a way of meeting us halfway.

For me, lightning bug became a quiet reminder that my intentions had been heard—and to simply keep going.
