Why You Can't Focus or Take Action

Hello dear reader,

I asked a creative friend — a member of Artist Diaries — if there is anything she’d like me to write about and this was the response.

“Focus, setting out steps and actually doing them is the biggest problem for me. I’m a huge dreamer, not so much action.”

The last sentence made me smile.

At first I thought, “I am definitely not the person to talk about this.”

Then I realised I am EXACTLY the person who can talk about this, because I struggle with it every day of my life. I’m learning to take action. And I’ve read numerous articles that resonated about it recently. The timing for this question is perfect.

My mum always tells me I have my head in the clouds and I spend too much time dreaming. It hurt me the first time she said it — as I am 95% sure she meant it to be a negative — but I only see it as positive now.

Being a dreamer is who I am.

I am a creative visionary. It makes perfect sense that someone who can visualise spaces before they’re built is also able to imagine new or alternate lives. Why can’t it be a super power?

I asked my husband about this over the weekend and his response shocked me. He has trouble dreaming or imagining. His brain simply won’t allow him to get beyond the weeds of details, logistics and expectations of others.

I think a lot of people don’t (or can’t) dream - to think outside the box or internally investigate what they really want in their lives.

So if you, my dear creative, are a dreamer — celebrate this!

What a beautiful thing, to see in your minds eye what is possible and have ideas on how you’d like your life to unfold. To cast a clear (or developing) vision for yourself that channels your needs and desires.

If you’re a dreamer, you’re one step ahead on knowing what to take action on!
