If you check the feed right now, you’ll find a re-issue of one of my favorite stories I have ever made… which is about one of my favorite weird little parts of fashion history: The Theatre De La Mode.
Very long story short- this is about a series of fashion dolls that was made to save the French couture industry after WWII. When materials were in short supply, clothiers and fashion houses wanted to show they could make clothing that was as luxe as ever… but they had to make it small.
But I think—just as interesting as the dolls themselves—is the reason why they currently live in a museum in the middle of nowhere in Washington State.
This story came out in 2020. And there have been so many new developments in the story since. Namely, during the pandemic, a number of brands decided to make their clothing lines in miniature.
The Theatre De La Mode was also mentioned on the Apple TV+ show The New Look.
While miniatures are not entirely coming back in style post-pandemic, the curator at the Maryhill Museum of Art (where the TDLM lives), said that the designer Orlando Dugai has been making visits, looking to make future collections in miniature.
