On the 29th of July, 1890 - Vincent van Gogh passed away at only thirty seven years old.

The cause of death was a gunshot wound (most likely self inflicted) from a few days earlier. And according to his brother Theo who had rushed from his art gallery Paris to be at Vincent’s bedside for those final hours, the artist’s last words were “La tristesse durera toujours” - “The sadness will last forever”

But of course, as we have discussed countless times together here at Art Every Day on all our other features on Vincent van Gogh- there is so much more to this man than just his tragedy.

With more than 850 paintings and well over 1000 drawings (all of which were created in only 10 years as an artist) - this is an artist who painted some of the most colourful, vivid, and passionate brushstrokes in all of art history.

And at his core, Vincent was always driven far more by a desire to capture the joy and the beauty of this world rather than the darkness he so often felt in his heart.

So with today being the 136th anniversary of his death, I felt it only right for us to do another little exhibition as a tribute. But this time, I want us to come away from some of the most famous masterpieces, and spend some time together with a selection of slightly lesser known works instead.

Then, perhaps we can use this as a chance to simply raise a glass or say a prayer for this wonderful man - and to see that while Vincent’s sadness may indeed last forever . . . so too will the joy, and the soul, and the sheer love that he put into every last one of his paintings.
