Zoë Yasemin · ART DIRECTION LIBRARY

Welcome to The Reading Room, a series in which I recommend three books around a single subject that matters to art direction, each one chosen for what it opened up in my own thinking and practice.

Every strong editorial has a spatial argument. The room, the landscape, the constructed set, these are decisions that shape everything else in the frame: how the body is positioned, how the garment falls, where the light lands, what mood the image carries before a single piece of styling enters the picture. The best art directors think about space first and clothes second, because the environment is what gives an image its logic. These three books are where I'd start if you want to understand how that thinking works.
