Hi Everyone,

I can’t believe it’s been more than a year since I last wrote here, and I hope you are all doing well.

I’m writing today with an unusual ask: that you sign up for another email list.

Many of you know that, alongside my work in the art world, I’ve spent the past few years writing a book that is not about art. It’s called No New Ideas: Exploring the Roots of Self-Help to Better Help Yourself, and it will be published by HarperCollins in January 2027.

No New Ideas explores the fascinating histories behind nine of the most familiar self-help ideas in American culture, such as practicing gratitude, cultivating joy, and exercising as therapy, and traces them across a wide range of sources—among others, ancient philosophy, Buddhism, Christianity, modern psychology, and twentieth-century Black and feminist thought. The argument—as the title suggests—is that these ideas are nothing new and can often be traced back hundreds, if not thousands, of years, and that knowing their origins helps you better help yourself.

I’ve launched a dedicated email list for those interested in the book—as well as the broader subject of the history behind self-help ideas—and I would love for you to sign up. Between now and January, subscribers will receive early chapter previews and launch event details. After publication, I will continue writing about the book’s various themes, reflect on and respond to feedback the book has received, and share ideas and history that didn’t make it into the final edit. I tried to make this material fit into Art & Artists, but I couldn’t figure out how to do so without making both suffer, hence this new offering.

If this all sounds like something you’re interested in, please sign up here.

And to be clear, Art & Artists isn’t going anywhere.

Finally, if you’re already interested in purchasing No New Ideas, you can pre-order it here. Pre-orders count significantly in a book’s first few weeks, so it’s genuinely very helpful.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,

No posts
