This is arroz con mango, where I’ll report back on what I’ve read, listened to, seen, and thought about.
‘Arroz con mango’ is a saying my mother said a lot; meaning it doesn’t go together. She would probably use it to describe gen z’s penchant for building outfits out of vintage tees, mini skirts, and cowboy boots. As one commenter on wordmeaning.org says, it’s “an incongruous mix of things.”
In college I joined the radio station, which required us to have a title for our shows. Starting off in the dead of Chicago winter at 7am on Fridays, I had little desire to choose something which would incidentally force me to play a certain genre week after week, and thus require dedicated planning and eventually research when I ran out of shit to play, so I settled on ‘arroz con mango.’ The hour long show was often chaos, not only due to the clashing sequences of songs, but also the ten minute-long training I received on using the audio board. But hey! it was in the name, the listener had been warned. And now you too reader, have also been warned.
Now two years out of school, I am missing some of this mess, having fallen into the routine of work life (snooze), and also craving the brief creative outlet of having an hour-long slot on early morning radio, which brings me to this newsletter. I envision it as a space to share my book reviews (sparingly uploaded to @littlelibrary305), playlists, photos of art I’ve come across, and musings on tik tok or whatever pops into my head.
I’m not sure how many people (if any) this will reach, but from one opinionated person to the next, I would loooove to hear feedback or requests on what to write about.
First post coming soon! xoxo
