Parallel Lines

Reena Kapoor · Arrivals and Departures

Written a long time ago, sharing now… I often live in other places—and times.

A golden spring evening. I walk to the old park bench. It’s borne witness to my daughter growing up. Several kids are out laughing, playing, approaching puppies to pet.

An old lady sits down beside me, asks, “Come here often?”

“Everyday.”

She continues, “My daughter grew up here.”

I laugh, nodding at our parallels.

She continues, “Best years! She’s grown up now. But this park will always be hers…”

Surprised, I turn towards her.

But there’s no one there!

Then I see my hands. So many more lines!

I look up. My daughter’s little again. She’s playing in the park.

Does time really only travel in one direction?

Does it ever fold back on you, dear reader? Or circle around?

Can you keep it in your curio box to revisit as you like?

Does it even exist?

One of my stories Gorgeous Beauty ‘“Saloon” was selected for publication in an e-magazine by the High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club in August. You can read it here.

And one of my new short stories, Fragments Unlived has been released in a new collection by the San Joaquin Valley Writers in their 2025 Anthology, aptly titled Beginnings and Endings.
