Ants

To celebrate this milestone, I’m sharing this video reading of Ants, a very unexpected love story. The reading is just shy of ten minutes long, so grab a cup of your preferred drink, and settle in for a story:

This story is close to my armchair rebel heart. I wrote the first draft while in a fever from a respiratory infection. I told it, still a little delirious, at a public online story slam in February. The idea of a collection was born. Ants went through a half dozen more drafts until the end of June. During that time, the second draft of my book went into hibernation, and I had a lengthy absence here, because there are only so many spoons in a day, and I still have to do Life™ on the daily, and allow for illness and other minor emergencies.

Unlocking any achievement with ME/CFS can feel like crawling through treacle, all while watching other people sprint past. The secret to my story, this book, maybe to life itself, was the collaboration. We were – we are – truly stronger together. (HT Michael Averill)

Whatever unique challenges each of my fellow contributors face in their bodies, relationships or other circumstances, there is an alchemy at work when we filter that through a story. A story that somehow manages to be absolutely unique and also profoundly universal.

When we as readers witness that, when we feel with someone’s pain and joy, then we’re all a little bit more connected, a little bit more human, a little bit closer to the world we would rather live in.
