Book of the Month June 2026

This month’s book is the one that started The Settler Chronicles series. Let me tell you how it came to be.

After reading The Martian, I was reminded how much I loved the idea of survival on an alien world. There are so many things we just take for granted living on Earth (like having air to breathe), that we’d have to come up with solutions for if we were to try to live on a rocky world in another solar system.

The actual first scene came to me as a chain of terrible “what ifs.” What would be worse than crashing a shuttle on a world with no breathable air? Having a hole in your space suit. And what’s worse than that? Being covered in mud while desperately trying to find the tear. Oh wait, the mud is starting to freeze…

But I kept on with the questions: what would survival look like with a larger group? And what if one of them was secretly working against the others? That question became the seed of Day 115 on an Alien World.

From there, the colony of Settler III took on a life of its own—full of quirky people trying to survive against the odds, including a protagonist who decides she’d rather live among her plants and escaped butterflies than with the rest of the crew.

If you love survival sci-fi with a cast of quirky, complicated characters and a thread of mystery running underneath, this one’s for you.
