A physician colleague recently published a thorough breakdown of FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, as a clinical stress phenomenon, mapping its neurobiological mechanisms with precision: the dopamine reward circuit, the anterior cingulate cortex processing social exclusion as physical pain, the amygdala’s threat vigilance, the prefrontal cortex’s diminishing ability to apply the brakes. He was writing about social media. He was describing sports betting.

Not metaphorically. Not approximately. The same neural architecture. The same reinforcement schedule. The same erosion of prefrontal inhibitory control. The same chronic cortisol elevation and sleep disruption downstream. The same targeting by platforms designed by people who understand exactly what they are doing to the brain and have chosen to do it anyway. What Dr. Saleeby mapped in the context of Instagram and TikTok is, with one layer of specificity added, a complete neurobiological model of what is happening to millions of American sports bettors right now — and understanding it at this level is the first step toward engaging with sports wagering from a position of genuine agency rather than managed reaction.

Start with the core FOMO mechanism. The fear of missing out is not simply the desire to be included. It is a chronic state of perceived inadequacy relative to what others are experiencing, amplified by a technological environment that makes other people’s rewards continuously and vividly visible while hiding their losses and struggles. The brain’s social comparison machinery — evolved for a world where being excluded from the tribe had survival consequences — is running continuously against a curated highlight reel and concluding, repeatedly, that it is behind.

Sports betting adds a financial dimension to this exact architecture. The line moves. The sharp money hits. The injury report drops at 4:47 PM and within eleven minutes the spread has shifted two points. Somebody knows something you do not. Somebody acted on it and made money while you were still watching the pregame show. The fear of missing that move — the sharp play, the steam, the public side that a savvy fade would have captured — is FOMO operating in a domain where the perceived missed experience is not a vacation photo but a winning position that someone else holds and you do not.

The line moving is the notification ping. The steam move is the viral post. The sharp action is the exclusive experience you were not in on. The neural response is identical.

This is not a loose analogy. The mesolimbic dopaminergic system does not distinguish between the neurochemical prediction error of missing a social event and the neurochemical prediction error of missing a line move. Both activate the ventral tegmental area to nucleus accumbens dopamine pathway. Both produce the same motivational salience: the cognitive weighting that tells the brain this matters, pay attention, act. The content is different. The circuitry is the same.

Dr. Saleeby describes the slot machine reinforcement schedule — intermittent, variable reward producing more compulsive behavior than consistent reward — as the core mechanism behind social media’s addictive properties. Sports wagering has its own version of this, and it is more precisely targeted than anything a slot machine can produce.

The near miss. Your parlay needs the Celtics minus 4.5 in Game 3. They only win the game by 4. While this destroys your parlay, you do not experience it as a true loss. Neuroimaging research and the 2024 Frontiers in Psychiatry virtual reality study with near-miss gambling protocols is illustrative here, consistently shows that near-miss outcomes activate the reward circuitry almost identically to wins, producing dopamine release and motivational arousal despite the objective loss. The brain reads ‘almost’ as ‘evidence of proximity to reward’ and updates its model of the game accordingly: I was right about the direction, just not the magnitude. Try again.

This is neurologically distinct from what happens in most social comparisons. The near miss in sports betting is precisely calibrated. The line setter’s job, in part, is to produce outcomes that feel tantalizingly close. A game decided on the final possession against the spread is not an accident. It is the operating environment of the product. The brain’s near-miss response was not designed to defend against an adversary who has optimized for it.

Brain imaging found dopamine production capacity 16 to 17 percent higher across the striatum in pathological gamblers versus healthy controls. That elevated dopamine does not make winning feel better. It makes anticipation feel more intense than the win itself.

The prefrontal cortex is supposed to be the adult in the room. Executive control, impulse inhibition, consequence evaluation, the ability to override the limbic system’s immediate-reward signal with the longer-term calculation that this is a bad idea. In healthy, rested, non-stressed decision-making, the PFC is effective. It is why most people who look at a parlay card, think about it for thirty seconds, and walk away.

The problem is what happens to PFC function under the conditions that sports betting actually operates in. Chronic cortisol elevation — exactly the stress physiology that FOMO produces through its HPA axis activation — directly impairs prefrontal inhibitory control. Sleep deprivation, which the late-night betting session and the anxiety of open positions produces, further degrades PFC function. Alcohol, which the sports bar environment and the app’s happy hour promotions facilitate, selectively suppresses the PFC before impairing anything else. A 2023 ecological momentary assessment study in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors found that in-play bettors reported elevated gambling-related harms, with alcohol and cannabis use during betting sessions sharply intensifying both bet frequency and downstream harm (Kim et al., 2023). The mechanism maps onto Bechara's dual-system model of addictive decision-making: an impulsive limbic system signaling immediate reward and a reflective prefrontal system signaling future consequences, where hyperactivity in the impulsive system can override the reflective one (Bechara, 2005). Live betting's compressed decision windows and intoxicated contexts are, in that framework, exactly the conditions under which the reflective side loses. In plain terms: two parts of your brain get a say on every bet: the part that wants to tap versus the part that wants to think it over. The tap side is faster. Live betting closes the window before the thinking side arrives, which is why the countdown clock exists. Impairment keeps the thinking side from arriving at all.

The sportsbooks have, whether by design or by market optimization, created an environment that systematically degrades the only neural system capable of counteracting the dopamine-driven impulse to act. This is not paranoid. It is product design. The same observation Dr. Saleeby makes about platform designers who ‘intentionally design social media platforms or apps that encourage 100% all-the-time connection’ applies with equal precision to the DraftKings notification at 11:47 PM about tomorrow’s injury-adjusted lines.

FOMO activates the amygdala’s threat vigilance circuitry because social exclusion is processed by the brain as a threat: fMRI studies show overlapping activation in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula for both physical pain and perceived social exclusion. The brain is not being irrational when it treats missing out as dangerous.

Sports betting personalizes this threat in a way that generic social media FOMO does not. When you miss the sharp move on the Nuggets game, it is not abstract. You know the specific thing you missed. You know the specific position someone else holds. You know the specific dollar amount that position might return. The amygdala’s threat response is not vague social anxiety: it is targeted, concrete, and attached to a number. This is why sports betting loss is experienced differently from other financial loss, why it produces a distinctive emotional signature that problem gamblers describe consistently: the loss is felt as a personal failure of perception, a missed signal, an exclusion from the group of people who knew.

That felt sense of exclusion from the knowing — from the sharp side, from the wise guys, from the public that faded correctly this time — is FOMO’s exact phenomenology running on gambling’s stakes. It is not just money lost. It is the evidence that someone else was in on something you were not.

Loss chasing — the behavior of increasing bet size or frequency following losses in an attempt to recover — is one of the most robustly documented pathological gambling behaviors and one of the most poorly understood by the people doing it. The Siena College survey finding that 60% of online sports bettors have chased losses is not a finding about bad math skills. It is a finding about the temporal dynamics of FOMO.

When you lose a bet, the position you should have held, is now visible to you in retrospect. You can see exactly what you missed. The fear of missing out has a timestamp and an amount. Chasing is the behavioral response to that specific, dated, quantified FOMO: the attempt to restore the position that the loss eliminated and to re-enter the club of people who got it right. The neurobiology is continuous from the original bet through the chase: the same dopamine anticipation, the same amygdala threat vigilance, the same degraded PFC inhibition, the same variable reinforcement schedule encouraging action. The emotional logic of the chase is entirely coherent within the FOMO framework. It is simply operating in a context where coherent emotional logic leads to objectively destructive outcomes.

Loss chasing is not irrational. It is the entirely rational response of a FOMO brain to the specific, timestamped, quantified evidence that it missed something — and its attempt to get back in before the door closes again.

None of this is an argument against sports wagering. My writing exists precisely because there is a population of bettors — the quantitative, data-oriented, disciplined segment — for whom the neurobiological vulnerabilities described above are substantially mitigated by practice, process, and the deliberate construction of decision environments that support rather than undermine PFC function. The difference between recreational bettors who lose across a season and serious bettors who find edges is, in part, a difference in how they manage the FOMO architecture.

The serious bettor who sets a line before looking at the market, who records every decision and reviews the reasoning rather than just the outcome, who has a pre-defined staking plan that removes size from the emotional calculation. This bettor is not more rational by nature. They have built external scaffolding that compensates for the limbic system’s systematic tendencies. They have made the FOMO response structurally less influential not by suppressing it but by removing the conditions under which it drives decisions.

This is why the prediction market framework — where the bettor is building probabilistic models and trading their beliefs rather than chasing action — produces a different cognitive profile than the recreational parlay builder. The prediction market bettor has a mechanism for updating beliefs correctly. The recreational bettor is responding to the emotional salience of the near miss, the chasing impulse, and the FOMO of the line that moved while they were deciding. Same uncertain outcomes. Radically different relationship to the neural machinery underneath.

Dr. Saleeby’s prescription for social media FOMO — limiting unnecessary use, disabling nonessential notifications, scheduling device-free periods, practicing mindfulness and gratitude — translates with directness into sports betting harm reduction. The bettor who sets their positions before lines are released and does not check movement compulsively is practicing the betting equivalent of disabling notifications. The bettor who reviews their decision process weekly rather than their win-loss record is practicing the betting equivalent of gratitude, redirecting attention to the quality of one’s own process rather than the perceived success of others.

JOMO, the Joy of Missing Out, has a direct betting equivalent too. The bet you did not take, the steam you did not chase, the line that moved without you… these are not missed opportunities. They are the preservation of position for a better edge. The bettor who has genuinely internalized this is not practicing restraint. They are operating from a different relationship to the neural architecture than the one the product is designed to exploit.

Understanding what is happening neurologically does not make the pull disappear. The dopamine system does not care about your understanding of the dopamine system. What it does is give you the correct frame for what you are managing — not a discipline problem, not a character problem, not a simple math problem about expected value. A neural architecture problem, shared with everyone who has ever felt anxious checking their phone, running the same software on different content. Managing it requires the same tools: structure, process, deliberate friction between impulse and action, and the intellectual humility to know that the house built its product on a detailed understanding of your brain that predates your arrival at the bet slip.
