Hi! And Happy Memorial Day Weekend, the official start to summer. I hope you enjoyed Tuesday’s collab post with Courtney Falsey. This was our second Substack collaboration (the first being in the fall) so I think we’re going to have to make the “Where’d You Get That?!” series a recurring one because we just have too much fun doing them.

What’s more fun than shopping for moms + kids with a theme? That’s right. Nothing!

But today I want to talk about something I get asked about a lot lately: how I’m building my personal brand and what that’s actually looked like in practice.

I won’t lie, I have more selfies than ever before. A byproduct of personal brand building lol.

For me, building a personal brand has mostly taken place on social media platforms — here on Substack, Instagram, and even a bit on TikTok. Oh and LinkedIn too, where I’ll be honest, I should be doing a lot more given I work for myself as a brand marketing consultant.

A little over a year in, here’s where things stand for me: 1.6k+ Substack subscribers, 3.6k on Instagram, and just hit 1k on TikTok. I’m not an expert and I’m very much figuring it out as I go, but I’ve learned a few things along the way and I’m monetizing it now, which is its own fun adventure. More on all of it below.

A question I get a lot, especially from those thinking about consulting or freelancing:

"Do I need to be online to build a personal brand and grow my business?"

I don’t know that you have to, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. And especially if you’re in marketing or design. Having even one channel where you’re creating or generating content helps support your overall personal brand, and you are ultimately what people (clients, customers, brands, etc.) are buying.

A quick note before you keep reading — if you’re into this topic and want to take the conversation further, I do offer 1:1 office hours! Lately the calls I’ve been having are what inspired this very post, so if you want to dig into any of this together, I’d love that.
