When 100% of Humanity Was Wrong

At one specific moment in history, exactly 100% of the human population disobeyed a direct command from Allah. That’s right.

Not a majority. Not most people. Every single human being alive committed a certain sin. Still, that sin did not become permissible or excused.

That’s the whole article in one line, and it’s worth sitting with and pondering over for a minute before we go any further, since it completely dismantles the claim:

“Come on, literally everyone is doing it.”

Here’s how we got to that moment. At one point in history, the entire human population was only two people. This isn’t a metaphor or an exaggeration; it was the literal population count. Allah placed Adam and his wife in the Garden, then He permitted them everything in it, and then told them: stay away from a single tree. Iblees worked on them until they ate from it, Adam first, according to the account in Surah Ta-Ha, then his wife followed. In that moment .. exactly 100% of the human race had disobeyed a direct command from Allah.

Think about it. If you ask someone today why they engage in a certain questionable habit, adopt a specific lifestyle, or turn a blind eye to something they know is wrong, you will almost always hear some variation of the same excuse:

“Come on, literally everyone is doing it.”

In today’s world, many Muslims have subconsciously turned the “majority” into our moral compass, or at the very least, a way that makes something wrong feel less severe. We think the sheer volume of people committing a sin gives a shield against accountability or at the very least makes it easier to commit the sin.

In the story of Adam, we are not talking about the majority .. No,... Every single human being alive, without exception, had done something wrong or sinful. And yet, the tree did not become permissible. The disobedience did not become obedience. Allah did not allow something haram because everyone did it.

What happened instead is recorded in Surah Al-Baqarah: Adam received words of repentance from his Lord, turned back to Him, and was forgiven, because Allah is the Most Merciful. The sin was still a sin. What saved Adam wasn’t the fact that everyone had done it. It was that he turned back to the One who defined it as wrong in the first place.

That is the entire point. Total consensus doesn’t rewrite the ruling. Repentance to Allah does something .. consensus does nothing.

That’s why Allah makes the principle explicit as a general warning later in the Quran, in Surah Al-An’am,

وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ

And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption , and they are not but falsifying.

Notice the phrasing: أَكْثَرَ most. Not: a corrupt minority.

The majority is named as the default risk, not the exception.

This should invite us to recalibrate how we process social pressure or social justification, specially when a lot of people, sadly, share their sins online. “Everyone’s doing it” is not evidence for anything except a description of what’s popular. “This is normal now” is not evidence of what’s halal .. it’s a description of a common habit.

Truth was never dependant or taken from a number of head count. It was fixed and outlined clearly the moment Allah defined it, and it remains fixed regardless of who or how many drift from it even if every single human being did.

While this is easy to agree with in the abstract, it actually becomes much harder to apply in the specific. It becomes more confrontational when:

• You like listening to music, but ‘literally everyone in my class does it, so.....’

• You want to buy a house using ribaa, but “who actually wastes their money in renting a house anymore? literally everyone finances their house this way now.”

• You want to get your dream car, but “how can anyone ever afford to get a new car without the bank?’

• You want to dress the way you want while you see literally all your friends on Instagram sharing their pictures with similar outfits.

• A form of entertainment, or interaction has become so common among fellow Muslims in your social circle that questioning it feels strange and ‘too strict’ rather than the main principle and guidance from Allah.

In every one of those cases, the honest question isn’t “how many people are doing this?” It’s the question Adam modeled for us: what did Allah actually say, and have I turned back to Him about it? Consensus among people was never the measure. So if it wasn’t the measure then at 100%, it isn’t the measure now, and it will never be.
