Like most towns on Route 66 in IL, it was the Chicago & Alton Railroad that led to Gardner’s establishment. Railway chief engineer, Henry Gardner, and his partners bought the land knowing the course the tracks would take. They platted a town in 1854 and named it after the railway chief himself.
The shop was closed. The surrounding decor is worth the photos.
This historic Two-Cell jail was built in 1906—the perfect fit for exactly one criminal and their partner in crime.
