I really enjoyed working with the U.S. Military veterans who are getting their introduction to the world of software engineering at Code Platoon. Fellow instructors and I conducted a workshop that exposed the class to TDD concepts and Pair Programming. The students had a great attitude and it was a pleasure working with them.

EatSafe - iOS Application for Food Inspections in Chicago
-
iOS application utilizing City of Chicago open data to provide a user-friendly interface that summarizes health inspections over time for restaurants within the city.
The project started at a Paypal BattleHacks hackathon where my teammate and I won a prize for our alpha version.
This was my first experience programming for iOS outside of college and I was able to build and design a working product in 24 hours.
We later published the app to Apple's App Store.

The Roof I.D. Project is an entrepreneurial project conceived by a core team of students in IPRO 397 (IPRO 2.0) Interprofessional by Design in spring 2012. The Roof I.D. Project is an entrepreneurial project conceived by a core team of students in IPRO 397 (IPRO 2.0) Interprofessional by Design in spring 2012. The aim of the project is to use rooftops as a platform for modifying the monotonous roofscape that satellite images present nowadays, making IIT a pioneer example to be followed in future roof designs. While most people don‟t think about roof design, we view these roofs as a platform for advertisement and self-expression. In this IPRO, the team aims to rehabilitate the roof of a building at IIT providing advertisement for the university, engaging the student community of our campus in the design, and improving the sustainability of the building being rehabilitated. The Roof I.D. Project brings a new approach to creativity, advertisement and sense of community, and most importantly, it contributes to a healthier planet.
As Quentin Hardy, journalist of the New York Times, stated in his article “Facing Fees, Some Sites Are Bypassing Google Maps” we can see that in February 2012 Google Maps had 65 million users. (Hardy, Quentin. "Facing Fees, Some Sites Are Bypassing Google Maps." New York Times. Web. ). Google, representing the largest search engine today, allows other companies to use their satellite imagery on their websites for location purposes. As an important navigation tool, these satellite images will start being portrayed by other search engines, providing us with a broader scope of opportunities to promote our project.
Expanding this project from IIT, to a larger and more diverse area such as Chicago, The Roof I.D. project will branch out and appeal to different types of users. This project will attract these users through advertisement possibilities, community involvement and means of navigation. Additionally this project will provide an emotional connection between Google Maps users and the buildings being shown, and it will also improve the sustainability of these buildings.
