What do the AI apps with the best retention have in common? When we compared high- and low-retention AI apps, a few patterns around trials, pricing, and monetization stood out: ๐ โ Subscription-only was 16.4pp more common among high retainers โ 7-day trials were 12.7pp more common โ Lower-priced subscriptions were 7.3pp more common On the other hand, no trial was 23.7pp more common among low-retention apps, and hybrid monetization was 16.3pp more common. None of these choices guarantees better retention. But they give AI app teams a few things worth revisiting: how quickly users reach value and what brings them back, whether the trial fits that value cycle, and whether the monetization model makes sense for both the product and its costs. Building an app that works everywhere shouldn't mean building it twice. Join us today for a live Shipaton session on Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) โ how to ship high-quality iOS and Android apps from a single codebase. We're bringing in a special guest from JetBrains to walk through the architecture, share real tips for shipping faster, and answer your questions on using KMP without cutting corners on quality. Stick around after the session for a live Q&A. ๐ Tuesday August 25 ๐ 9am PT / 12pm ET / 6pm CET

๐จOne week until Google Play's Billing Library v8 deadline. Starting August 31, 2026, new apps and app updates using Google Play Billing must use Billing Library 8 or later. Your existing app won't suddenly stop working if you're still on an older version. But there's an important catch: โ You won't be able to publish a new app or app update until you upgrade. โ If you're not going to make the deadline, you can request an extension until November 1, 2026. Using RevenueCat? Billing Library 8 support is already included in RevenueCat Android SDK 9.x or later, so you don't need to migrate the underlying Google Play Billing integration yourself. Make sure you've upgraded to SDK 9.x or later before your next Android release. If you haven't touched your Android billing setup in a while, now is a good time to check which version you're on. ๐ We put together a full migration guide covering what changed in Billing Library 8, what you need to update, and how to prepare for v9: https://lnkd.in/eeqXvgYd

Meet the first judges for #Shipaton 2026 ๐ Founders, developers, educators, AI researchers, and people who know a great app when they see one. They'll be helping decide which apps take home a share of $1M+ in prizes across 20+ categories: Antoine van der Lee Founder of SwiftLee and creator of RocketSim, helping iOS engineers get better at Swift since 2015. Philipp Lackner Founder of PL Coding and the face behind the largest YouTube channel for Android and KMP development. Adam Lyttle Full-time indie iOS developer who has launched more than 40 apps and shares the lessons on YouTube. Ali Albazaz Founder and CEO of Inkitt, the AI company building the operating system for storytellers. Stefan Jovanovic Kotlin Multiplatform developer and educator, helping developers turn ideas into shipped projects through tutorials and courses. David Barnard Growth Advocate at RevenueCat, indie iOS developer for over a decade, and host of the Sub Club podcast. Scott Cameron Product growth at Pok Pok, named to TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies, focused on subscription monetisation that feels delightful rather than extractive. And that's just the first group. More judges are coming soon. Building something new? Ship it by September 30. ๐ shipaton.com #Shipaton

Every subscription team is grinding out ad creative right now. One company solved it by paying its own customers ๐ต On the latest Sub Club, Luke Martin-Fuller, co-founder of Visible, walks through how the program actually works: ๐ A line in the monthly member digest invites customers into a Slack group ๐ They submit an audition tape, then get a creative brief every week ๐ Any video the team uses earns a flat fee โ real money, not credits or a discount on a future purchase ๐ Everything tests on small budgets, and only one or two videos a week ever get scaled spend The whole operation, plus a separate program working with established creators in the space, is run by a team of two. The output isn't just cheaper creative volume. It's people who genuinely use the product talking to an audience that recognizes itself in them โ which is difficult to fake and difficult to copy. AI apps earn 41% more per paying user than traditional subscription apps, but churn 30% faster. We analyzed 3,519 AI apps to see what the highest-retaining ones have in common. Here's what we found ๐ โ The gap is wide. High-retention AI apps keep 13.9% of paid subscriptions after a year, while low-retention apps keep 1.4%. โ Most of that difference shows up at the first renewal. On monthly plans, 57.9% of subscriptions renew at high-retention apps versus 30.2% at low-retention apps. โ The low-retention group looks like the AI gold rush: newer launches, more weekly plans, higher prices, and often no trial. Growth experts we spoke with recognize the playbook: monetize the viral moment, then move on to the next one. The interesting question underneath: is low retention a failure, or a strategy that works until the next viral AI hit doesn't come? ๐ฅ The full article digs into both readings, with expert takes from David Vargas and Cristian Rotari: https://lnkd.in/ebMESQfb

๐จ Apple announced new business terms for apps in the EU. The big changes: a new commission structure, no more per-install Core Technology Fee, and IAP + app-to-web can now coexist in the same app. The new terms take effect October 1. Here's what developers will pay: โ Apple IAP: 26% standard. Developers in the Small Business, Mini Apps Partner, and Video Partner programs pay 15%. Auto-renewing subscriptions also drop to 15% after the first year. โ Alternative payments in an App Store app: 20%, or 10% for developers in those programs and auto-renewing subscriptions after the first year โ App-to-web: 15%, or 10% for developers in those programs and auto-renewing subscriptions after the first year โ Apps distributed outside the App Store: 5% on digital transactions, replacing the per-install Core Technology Fee There's another important change: developers can now offer Apple IAP and alternative payments in parallel, including app-to-web. If you offer both on the same interface, IAP must be available alongside the alternative option and displayed at least as prominently. Or, you can choose to offer alternative payments without IAP. Apple says developers can choose IAP, alternative payment processing, app-to-web, or a combination.
