An independent infrastructure organization dedicated to the publication of open bibliographic and citation data
About us
OpenCitations is an independent infrastructure organization for open scholarship dedicated to the publication of open bibliographic and citation data by the use of Semantic Web (Linked Data) technologies. It is also engaged in advocacy for open citations, particularly in its role as a key founding member of the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC). For administrative convenience, OpenCitations is managed by the separate newly formed Research Centre for Open Scholarly Metadata at the University of Bologna. OpenCitations espouses fully the founding principles of Open Science. It complies with the FAIR data principles by Force11 that data should be findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable, and it complies with the recommendations of I4OC that citation data in particular should be structured, separable, and open. On the latter topic, OpenCitations has recently published a formal definition of an Open Citation, and has launched a system for globally unique and persistent identifiers (PIDs) for bibliographic citations โ Open Citation Identifiers (OCIs).

The #OpenScience #ecosystem has never been richerโฆ or harder to navigate. As new infrastructures, platforms, and initiatives continue to emerge, we still lack a shared map to understand how they connect. The result? In our new article for Katina Magazine, Isabelle Dorsch, Marc-Andrรฉ Simard, and I argue that mapping open science is not simply about visualization. It is about creating a shared reference point that helps communities coordinate, identify complementarities, and build a more coherent ecosystem. We also introduce the ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐, a community-driven dashboard designed to make the open science landscape more visible, and open to collective contributions. Many thanks to Kate McCready for inviting us to contribute to ๐๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐ข, and to Maryam Sayab and Elizabeth Weiss for their thoughtful guidance and all their work throughout the editorial process.
Ademรกs, alinea el CWTS con los principios de DORA (Declaration on Research Assessment) y CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment.

This week we made an important announcement at CWTS | Leiden University: We will discontinue the use of Web of Science (WoS) data in bibliometric analyses performed by our center, including in the CWTS Leiden Ranking. Let me take the opportunity to offer some comments on this step: 1. Discontinuing the use of WoS data doesnโt mean CWTS discontinues its bibliometric activities. On the contrary, we aim to strengthen our bibliometric work by investing in transparent and inclusive approaches to bibliometrics, based on open data sources. This is a crucial to advance responsible use of quantitative indicators, for instance in research assessment. CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment 2. Discontinuing the use of WoS data is part of a broader transition CWTS is making from proprietary to open data sources for bibliometric analyses: ๐นThe first steps were taken almost a decade ago, when we started to engage with the Initiatives for Open Citations and Open Abstracts, OpenCitations, and related developments. ๐นMore recently, in 2023, we launched our Information & Openness focal area, an internal team dedicated to the transition to open research information. https://lnkd.in/eusUdyi9 ๐นNext, in 2024, we launched the CWTS Leiden Ranking Open Edition, based on data from OpenAlex instead of WoS. ๐นAlso in 2024, we contributed to the launch of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, a global initiative to promote open research information. ๐นIn recent years, we strengthened our relationship with open infrastructure organizations such as Crossref, DataCite, OpenAlex and OpenAIRE AMKE. We also made considerable efforts to help advance openness of research information in the Netherlands and abroad. ๐นAs a natural next step, we are now discontinuing our use of WoS data. 3. Discontinuing our use of WoS data also reflects our support for innovative new approaches to scholarly publishing. WoS does a poor job in supporting this. https://lnkd.in/e8_wWrTy eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd. 4. We have been able to discontinue our use of WoS data because other actors in the research system have started to take similar steps. Over the past year, several major Dutch research organizations have for instance discontinued their WoS or Scopus subscriptions. Also, Dutch research organizations recently released the revised Strategy Evaluation Protocol, in which open research information is the norm https://lnkd.in/eGtUN9qr. We are building on the steps taken by others! 5. Likewise, we hope others will build on the steps we are taking. We are happy to share our experience and help others make a similar transition to open research information. 6. We are grateful to the Clarivate WoS team for the collaboration over the past decades. While CWTS and Clarivate are now moving in different directions, our collaboration has long been mutually beneficial. CWTS and Clarivate released a joint statement. https://lnkd.in/enYRHZMu
Today we announce a next step in our transition to open research information: CWTS will discontinue the use of Web of Science data, both in the Leiden Ranking and in the services that we offer to external organisations. This step aligns with our work towards open research information, notably in our focal area Information & Openness, the Open Edition of our Leiden Ranking, and the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information that we co-initiated. In a joint statement with Clarivate, Ludo Waltman, our Scientific Director, says: โWe have always valued the Web of Science database as an important source of data for scientometric analyses. However, we recognize the importance of openness, transparency, and inclusiveness in scientometric analyses. The proprietary model of the Web of Science database is incompatible with this. We have therefore decided to discontinue our use of Web of Science data and to move to open alternatives.โ More information and the joint statement by CWTS and Clarivate can be found on our website ๐ https://lnkd.in/e339fC-W OpenAlex OpenAIRE AMKE
