In 2010, LGBTQ+ people and their allies all over the world uttered three words that would give rise to a global movement — it gets better. A wildly successful social media campaign was born, with more than 70,000 people sharing their stories to provide hope and encouragement to young LGBTQ+ people. Today, the It Gets Better is a global non-profit that reaches millions of young people each year through inspiring media programming, educational resources, international affiliates in 19 countries, and access to an arsenal of community-based service providers. It Gets Better received an Emmy Award in 2012 and has garnered support from Presidents Obama and Biden, Kerry Washington, Jane Fonda, Kelly Clarkson, Gabrielle Union, Chris and Scott Evans, Mj Rodriguez, Ciara, Jojo Siwa and more than 760,000 others who have taken the pledge to share messages of hope and to speak up against intolerance.

  As schools reopen, LGBTQ+ young people need to know someone has their back. So we asked the It Gets Better community to help us create a queer school survival guide filled with the advice they wish they had heard growing up. And they delivered: “Finding your people and having strong advocates really helps make high school better.” “It’s okay for this to not be the best time of your life. Our Youth Voices alumni Elliot, Mia, and Marshall are queer youth leaders from Texas with firsthand insight into what proactive allyship looks like—and what young people need from the educators, social workers, administrators, and other adults who serve them.   Invest in LGBTQ+ young people early, and there is no telling how far they can go. Kiki joined It Gets Better’s Youth Voices program at 13 as its youngest member. Over the next five years, she shared her story, helped shape campaigns and resources, spoke to global LGBTQ+ leaders, and became a mentor to other queer teens. This fall, she is headed to Harvard. “I genuinely do believe that It Gets Better is the reason I am where I am,” Kiki told us. “That experience of meeting youth from across the country and working with them was very formative.   A queer journalist hosting a true-crime podcast about a cold case from his hometown. A trans teen uncovering a family secret that changes everything. A pop star in a fake relationship while trying to protect her career and her identity. A girl matched with the wrong soulmate by an algorithm that supposedly never misses. A queer reimagining of "The Great Gatsby." A first love that refuses to stay hidden. Those are the kinds of stories at the center of this year’s It Gets Better Summer Reading Challenge. We’re highlighting books in which LGBTQ+ people get to be full characters swept up in mysteries, romances, thrillers, family secrets, ambition, and messy choices. Their queerness matters, but it is not the only thing happening to them. That is the visibility we want more of.
