  Very cool to see Society for News Design award ProPublica & High Country News's collab on grazing in the West a Bronze Medal. Big hat tip to everyone that worked on this, especially Allen Tan, Shoshana Gordon, Michael Squires, Mark Olalde, & Roberto (Bear) Guerra! "The judges praised the cohesive, minimalist design, highlighting the elevated use of typography, illustration, and photo-stitching. They appreciated the purposeful horizontal scroll and consistent branding, noting that the repetition felt intentional within a tight package. They also emphasized the restrained design choices, thoughtful tone, and how the color palette complemented the photography."   Beyond thrilled to share that High Country News has won a National Magazine Award for Best Independent Magazine Cover for our May 2025 cover, The Art of the Cruise. Major props to Visuals Editor Roberto (Bear) Guerra and to photographer Gabriela Campos. Campos, a Santa Fe native, has been photographing lowrider culture for many years, showing up consistently at lowrider events, going out photographing on weekends when people are out cruising. Her images offer a level of intimacy and depth that is only possible because she has spent years earning the trust of this community. Lowrider culture is an important part of the Latino community in the Southwest that is often misrepresented in the mainstream media. When covering underrepresented communities, many publications tend to focus on issues of justice or immigration. It’s rare to see projects that depict an aspect of a community that is joyful and celebratory. This cover and the photoessay it teases, do just that. ✊🏼🎉🏆

  High Country News is partnering with Report for America to launch the Western Environmental Reporting Collaboration (WERC), a new reporting initiative focused on environmental coverage across the West. Selected reporters will split their time between a host newsroom (75%) and High Country News (25%), collaborating closely with editors and contributing to impactful regional stories.
