New types of organization are needed to accelerate scientific progress. Academic research groups and startup companies are essential to science and technology development. But there are some projects they just aren’t suited for. A university astronomy lab couldn’t have launched the Hubble Space Telescope on its own, nor would a venture-backed startup have built the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Hubble and CERN illustrate a common pattern in science: a need for projects that are bigger than an academic lab can undertake, more coordinated than a loose consortium or themed department, and not directly profitable enough to be a venture-backed startup or industrial R&D project. Focused Research Organizations (FROs) are a new type of scientific institution designed to fill this gap.

  Today researchers Dragonfly FRO published a crucial discovery about cosmic recycling—describing for the first time how a dying star's material is recycled back into the galaxy, becoming the raw material for future stars and planets. Pointing a new telescope at the Helix Nebula they found 22 never-before-seen bow-shaped shockwaves tracing the path of stellar debris dissolving into interstellar space. A missing link in the cosmic recycling process that made life on Earth possible. This is what Convergent Research’s Focused Research Organizations are built for.   Frontier just announced $915M in new funding for carbon removal. It’s great to see buyers committing to the long-term investment that CDR technologies need to have meaningful impact. Excited to see this momentum!

  Today we’re announcing that Frontier has raised an additional $915M for carbon removal, from Stripe, Google, Salesforce, Shopify, H&M Group and Anthropic. The original AMC was designed to help get carbon removal off the starting line. That signal worked. Hundreds of companies are being built, tens of thousands of tons have been delivered, and hundreds of millions in financing has been raised. The Growth AMC is about pushing the best companies to the scale that enables robust, long-term demand. In practice, that means:    - Focusing on 10-15 projects through 8-10-year offtakes, buying a significant share of a company’s capacity as far out as 2040.  - Prioritizing projects with a clear path for how policies will cover the cost of tons delivered once our contracts expire.  - Continuing to support the best early-stage ideas through smaller offtakes, prepurchases, and R&D grants. Postdoctoral Research Scientist – OAE Process-Model Testbed You'll help design and build a 1D biogeochemical testbed within our C-Star modeling system to isolate and characterize the processes that govern OAE efficacy: mineral dissolution kinetics, particle transport, electrochemical alkalinity addition, and sediment cycling.
