After finishing The Doors of Eden last week, I got turned onto Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy by Niles Johnson and started reading the first book, Annihilation. Love is a strong word, but I really did love this book. It was a great palate cleanser after reading several Adrian Tchaikovsky books in a row—which, don’t get me wrong, are great, but Tchaikovsky writes like someone who cut his teeth on Twitter in the 2010s. Southern Reach is stylistically more literary and careful. I’m already onto the second book, Authority, which is fun as well (but not as good as the first book in my opinion so far).
