I’m Chip Huyen, a writer and computer scientist. I grew up chasing grasshoppers in a small rice-farming village in Vietnam.

I'm interested in AI for storytelling and roleplaying. Previously, I built machine learning tools at NVIDIA and Netflix. I've also founded and sold a company.

I graduated from Stanford, where I taught ML Systems. The lectures became the foundation for the book Designing Machine Learning Systems, which is an Amazon #1 bestseller in AI and has been translated into 10+ languages (very proud)!

My new book AI Engineering (2025) is currently the most read book on the O’Reilly platform. It’s also available on Amazon and Kindle.

Great book to learn about Huawei's fascinating culture, which is very different from American corporate cultures (though I didn't really like how the Chinese culture is portrayed).

1. "Sacrifice for the company"
1/3 of the senior quit and rejoined at entry level when asked by the company. If Deng (the country leader) could face setbacks and come back 3 times, why can't you?

2. Anti profit maximization
While American corporates are required to maximize profits for shareholders, Huawei intentionally does not do that. They want to be #1 technology company in the world.

3. Ownership structure
Ren, the founder, owns only 1% of the company. Leadership owns 3%.
The rest belongs to employees (past and present), which totals 169,054 as of late 2025

4. Party alignment
The company has a chief party secretary to make sure the company align with the party's goal. The chief party secretary has a lot of power, including vetoing any promotions.

I like how philosophical and narrative-driven Demis Hassabis is.

I like how philosophical and narrative-driven Demis Hassabis is.

According to him, the universe can only be perceived through your brain, and therefore, there are 2 ways to understand the universe: through physics and through neuroscience. Physics is external. Neuroscience is internal. Demis chose neuroscience.

In this framing, information is the unit of the universe, not atom.

The first 1/3 of the book covers the story Demis tells about his life. The last 1/3 of the book, however, is the author trying to do speed run of AI coverage, which is less interesting to me.

The walk in the famous Père-Lachaise cemetery of Paris was so beautiful that I bought the book by its curator of 18 years.

Fascinating stories about what it's like to live inside one of the biggest parks in Paris (apparently a huge perk during COVID),

Also I was very pleasantly surprised to stumble upon the work that Picasso did for his friend's grave in this cemetery.
