Certified Type Geek here….. I adore this book.
As a kid in the 80’s I was absolutely fascinated with the old Letraset catalogs and dry-transfer letters, and I’d spend hours trying to recreate the typefaces in the catalogs in pencil… I knew I had to have this book, and I’ve been savoring it since it arrived.
The layout is so well done- each page is dedicated to highlighting a contemporary typeface, with its designer and publisher, then it’s exquisitely showcased with real examples of use. Brilliant! It’s not just focused on the letters and words, but on telling the story with them.
The included designer essays offer personalized insights into the power of a letterform and how the form can shape the message. I particularly enjoyed the selection by Veronika Burian, “Selling a Voice”.
Finally, I just have to say that this book is perfectly touchable, in both the pages and the cover- this aspect can be such a deal-breaker on an art book! They nailed it here. I am especially enamored with the subtle, silvery-metallic dashed typographic lines on the cover…
I would buy this book as a gift for anyone who loves graphic design and type!
