there are two types of 88x31: those that are links to other websites, and those that are purely symbolic. these should not be treated the same way

some websites store 88x31 images locally for faster loading and longevity of the image. this works for the latter type of 88x31, and this is what should be done in that case

if the 88x31 is a link to a different site, load the image from the target site. it may change in the future, and if the site dies, its image should too.

hotlinking is generally considered bad practice. this is an exception. the explicit goal of a link-88x31 is to share content from a different site. images loading slower because of DNS and extra connections does not matter when the images are not part of the content of the site

linking an 88x31 and archiving an 88x31 are two different operations
