About

The World’s Knowledge
In The People’s Hands

At a time when information on the internet is often manipulated and trust in institutions is eroding, Wikipedia’s role in the world has never been more important. The Atlantic called Wikipedia “the last bastion of our shared reality.” In 2025, the United Nations named Wikipedia a digital public good. More importantly, Wikipedia is trusted by people all over the world.

It’s fair to wonder: at a time when trust in institutions is evaporating, how has Wikipedia managed to continue gaining people’s trust?

We’ve done it by vesting our power in the people. Millions of volunteer editors around the world have poured knowledge into over 65 million Wikipedia articles in over 300 languages. They are the collectors, archivists, and defenders of the sum of all human knowledge.

Founded in 2016, the Wikimedia Endowment is the permanent steward of this collective achievement. Every month, more than 1.5 billion people turn to Wikipedia to understand the world around them. We support initiatives to innovate and strengthen the technology behind Wikipedia, ensuring that humanity’s knowledge remains reliable, neutral, and accessible to all — now and for generations to come.

“We’ve reached a fragile point in the history of human knowledge. We’ve waded into a new era that begs the question: Who will hold the knowledge? Who will have the power? That choice still belongs to us — the people.”

Lisa Seitz Gruwell

President of the Wikimedia Endowment

How the Endowment Works

The Wikimedia Endowment is a permanent fund that safeguards Wikipedia’s future. Gifts are invested, and the earnings offer steady support year after year, ensuring the world’s largest human-curated knowledge resource endures and adapts as technology evolves. It provides lasting financial stability while investing in bold, forward-looking projects that expand and transform how the world shares human knowledge. By combining financial sustainability with investments that drive innovation, the Endowment fulfills its promise for the future: ensuring Wikipedia remains strong, resilient, and continues to thrive for generations to come.

  • An Independent Endowment

The Wikimedia Foundation’s annual fund powers Wikipedia’s day-to-day operations, such as building and maintaining web servers, staff, and volunteer support. The Wikimedia Endowment is a separate and independent U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. Gifts to the Endowment secure tomorrow, creating a fund that grows and protects Wikipedia for the long term. Together, they fuel the present and guarantee the future of the world’s most trusted source of knowledge.

Reports and Transparency
