Hans-Joachim Börner was born on 24 Jul 1918 in Oderau. He joined the Kriegsmarine as part of Crew 1937. He served as First Watch Officer and ADC with the 9th Outpost flotilla (Vorpostenboot) from May 1940 to Feb 1941.
He underwent U-boat training from Feb 1941 to Oct 1941. Hans-Joachim Börner served as First Watch Officer on the successful type IXC boat U-507 (KrvKpt. Harro Schacht) from Oct 1941 to Oct 1942. With this boat he spent 177 days at sea and sank 16 ships for 62,913 BRT and damaging another.
He then completed U-boat Commander's Course with the 24th Flotilla from Nov to Dec 1942, followed by U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung) with the 7th training unit (KLA) in Dec 1942.
Hans-Joachim Börner commissioned the new type VIIC boat U-735 on 28 Dec 1942. He took the boat into the Baltic for work up with the 8th training flotilla. On 1 Aug 1944 the boat was assigned to the 11th combat Flottille. The boat then did several transit patrols in Norwegian waters but no formal war patrol.
U-735 was sunk at 2359hrs on 28 December 1944 in Oslofjord off Horten, Norway, in position 59.28,2N, 10.28,7E, by bombs during a British air raid (5th Group, RAF Bomber Command). 39 dead and 1 survivor. Börner was lost with his boat.
