Gerhard Linder was born on 21 Mar 1920 in Münsterstad, Lower Franconia. He entered service with Crew 1938 and was promoted to Oblt. on 1 Apr 1943.
Gerhard Linder served as Second Watch Officer (IIWO) on the type VIIC boat U-571 (Knights Cross winner Kptlt. Helmut Möhlmann) from May 1941 to Mar 1942, then as First Watch Officer (IWO) on the same boat from Mar to Sep 1942. During this time he went out on 5 war patrols, for a total of 201 days at sea, helping sink or destroy7 ships and damaging another one.
The Elektro boats
He attended a U-boat commander's course from Sep to Oct 1942. Gerhard Linder completed U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung) for the type XXI at the 8th training unit (8 KLA) from Sep to Oct 1944. He then commissioned the new type XXI boat U-2515 on 19 Oct until 3 Dec 1944 when it was damaged by a mine.
Gerhard Linder then moved over to the sister-boat type XXI boat U-3006 from 4 Dec 1944 to Jan 1945.
He ended the war as a Platoon Leader in Naval Infantry Regiment 5 from Apr 1945 until capitulation.
