Hunold von Ahlefeld was born on 2 Apr 1923 in Linz, Rhineland, and entered Kriegsmarine as part of Crew X/1940.
He commenced Officer and U-boat training from Oct 1940 to Aug 1941. Hunold von Ahlefeld then served as Watch Officer (supernumerary) during sea training aboard the type IXC boat U-455 from Aug 1941 to Apr 1942.
Hunold von Ahlefeld served as Watch officer training on the U-455 from Aug 1941 to April 1942. He was then a Watch Officer on the type VIIC boat U-94 (Oblt. Otto Ites) from May to Jun 1942 (51 days at sea). He underwent further training and courses from Jul 1942 to Jan 1943.
He completed U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung) from Jan to March 1943. Hunold von Ahlefeld served as First Watch Officer (IWO) on the type VIIC boat U-967 (Oblt. Herbert Loeder) from Mar 1943 to May 1944 (87 days at sea).
He attended commander's training courses, including the U-boat Training Division (ULD, Unterseeboots-Lehrdivision) and the 23rd Flotilla, from Mar to May 1944, followed by tactical training with the 27th Flotilla from May to Jul 1944. Hunold von Ahlefeld was promoted to Oblt. on 1 Oct 1944.
He then took command of the small school boat type IID U-150 from 16 July to 21 Dec 1944.
The Elektro boats
Hunold von Ahlefeld started another U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung) in Dec 1944, this time for the new smaller Elektro boats of type XXIII. He was intended to commission the new boat U 4714 but the boat was not finished in time and was scuttled by von Ahlefeld at Kiel on 3 May 1945.
