Au Revoir, TFAW

It seems Dark Horse Comics will close their “Things From Another World” retail stores by the end of June.

For me, the Beaverton location is the greatest loss. Originally named Pegasus Books, it was founded by brothers Mike and Pat Richardson. Mike went on to found Dark Horse Comics, purportedly from the back room of that very store.

This particular storefront was immortalized as a setting in Boris the Bear, one of the earliest Dark Horse series:

Growing up, I saw a few different comic book stores come and go, but Things From Another World (I called it “tee-faw” once I stopped calling it “Pegasus”) was a constant. I’d ask my parents to take me on my birthday. When we were old enough, my brother and I would take a train partway and walk the rest. In high school, my buddy Mike and I visited every month for a year to pick up Batman: Hush.

I’ll admit, it’s been a while since I stopped by. As my tastes evolved and expanded and I discovered Portland-area shops like Excalibur, Cosmic Monkey and Floating World (among others), it was tough for such a small floorspace to compete. (A greater emphasis on gaming and collectibles didn’t help.)

But it’s still sad to see it go. Sad for staff, for regulars, for the loss of history, and for what it probably says about the future of Dark Horse Comics.
