PgUS Opportunity Grant Application
Please complete this form to apply for a grant to attend virtual or in-person conferences or events with the goal of either learning and/or presenting about PostgreSQL and becoming involved with the PostgreSQL community.

Individuals who apply should be active members of the open source community., or people new to the community who are looking to become involved, and who require financial assistance for conference expenses.

Applications are reviewed semi-monthly, and approved on a case-by-case basis. Please note that grant approvals may be only part of the amount requested, based on available funding and the number of applications received.

We understand that it takes time to make travel plans and get your affairs in order prior to traveling, including applications for travel visas. In the final question, you have an opportunity to add any relevant information to your application. If you are under deadline pressure for your travel dates, please include that information, and we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.

Your chances of approval are better if you choose a conference that is close to your location. Please research conferences and events nearby prior to submitting an application.

Note that travel grant requests for one-day events in other countries will not be approved unless there is a unique circumstance. The cost between international travel for a one-day event and international travel for a multi-day event is usually not much different, and it is difficult to justify a significant expenditure for a one-day event which requires international travel.

A full list of local user groups can be found here:
https://www.postgresql.org/community/user-groups/

The PostgreSQL Global Development Group maintains a list of PostgreSQL events. Please note that only events marked as "Community" events are eligible for grant support:
https://www.postgresql.org/about/events/

Other conferences and events may be approved on a case-by-case basis, taking into account how attending would relate to PostgreSQL community development.

If you are located in the European Union and need travel support for an event in the EU, please apply to the PostgreSQL Europe grant program:
https://www.postgresql.eu/diversity/travel_scholarship/

Because we have a fixed amount of funds available, we generally are not able to make more than one grant per year to any one person. We will consider exceptional circumstances, such as being selected as a speaker for two events, but as a practical matter, you should apply first for the event which is the most significant for your career development.

If you have been selected as a speaker for two events and are applying for a grant to fund travel to both events, please submit a separate application for each event.

If you have any questions, please email communitydevelopment@postgresql.us.

Please take a moment to research potential conferences, events, or meetups near your location. It is worthwhile to note your application is more likely to be approved if seeking admission and travel reimbursement to an event near you.

Additionally, please note that funding requests for an event which does not meet the criteria to be categorized as a community event are unlikely to be approved.
Have you been selected as a speaker for this event? *
What is your motivation for attending this event? Explain how attending this event will benefit you, your local community, and the PostgreSQL community. *
What is your involvement and history with PostgreSQL, both as a user and as a member of the community?

If you are new to the community, what interests you about becoming involved with it?

*
If you receive this grant, how do you plan to pay it forward in the community? *
Some ideas include presenting at a PostgreSQL user group, writing a blog post, and live posting during the event.

Additionally, for attendance at PgUS events, grant recipients should plan to fill one volunteer shift each day of the conference to develop conference coordination skills, either as a Room Host or other attendee-facing role.
As the recipient of a Community Development grant, you are expected to become involved in the PostgreSQL community if you do not currently have an active role.

If you are currently active in the community, please tell us about your involvement.

If you are not currently active in the community, please list any skills you would be willing to share, or what kinds of projects you would be comfortable volunteering for.
Please share the reasons for your request. For example:
*You are at the start of your career, and attending the conference will provide an entry into the community.
*You are at an important point in your career path, and speaking at the conference will give your career an essential boost.
*You are the first person in your immediate family to earn a college degree, and attending the conference will provide professional advantages you would not otherwise have.
* You are from an under-represented or under-served geographical area or community demographic in terms of educational and/or professional development opportunities.
*You are working to establish or grow the PostgreSQL community in your area, and attending the conference will provide useful connections.
*Other educational or career-related benefits of attendance.
*
Are you in need of a conference ticket? *
The ticket award would cover only the main conference. Additional tutorials/paid trainings are separate from the conference ticket and are not eligible for reimbursement under this grant.
How much financial aid are you requesting? Please research and provide a complete estimate of any anticipated costs.
Provide a breakdown by each category:
Airfare
Hotel
Ground transportation (airport shuttle, taxi, rental car, etc.)
Meals
Other expenses

If you are applying for a ticket only, you do not need to list travel costs.
*
Is your employer able to provide a conference ticket and/or travel support? If so, how much of the conference costs will they provide? *
When is the latest you are able to be notified about your Opportunity Grant application status?
*
Anything else you'd like to add?
