I had read it for years as liturgy.

DO NOT EDIT OR CHANGE THIS BOOK OR THE MESSAGE CONTAINED WITHIN EITHER THE WORDS OR THEIR NUMBERS FOR ALL IS SACRED

It is not liturgy.
It is a maintenance instruction.

Page fifteen, last line.
The transcription I had trusted
for as long as I had trusted anything

Somebody typed the letter twice
carrying it across a line break.
Somebody else copied that.
Then everyone did.

Their script has a fixed pitch.
Their cipher is one glyph for one letter.

Four hundred twenty-nine pixels of ink.
Eight runes predicts four thirty-four.
Nine predicts four eighty-eight.

The page said eight.
The copy said nine.

4430 → 4357

and the difference between them
is seventy-three,
which is the value of the letter L,
which is the letter that was typed twice.

A composite, corrected,
becomes prime.
