How do you cultivate safety in sensitive discussions with the people you care about?
Have you changed anyone’s mind about anything, ever?
How do you speak with a loved one who holds mistaken/harmful beliefs in such a way that you avoid activating their fight/flight response?
Modern life is fraught with discussions about sensitive subjects. Nobody likes being insulted or frustrated by an argument.
However, cutting contact feels like abandoning the premise of society itself.
Saying “we won’t discuss this” is the mark of dogma. It’s a religious kind of certainty about things that are not in fact certain.
How do you satisfy a skeptic of your beliefs without lying to them or yourself, without hurting anyone’s feelings? How do you challenge someone else’s beliefs with the same care?
Is such a thing even possible, or is humanity doomed?
