Some neat unexpected side-effects after about six months of HRT:

  • my tolerance for spicy food seems to have increased? I always liked spice, but now I find myself adding even more to be able to get the taste
  • I just got my eyes checked today and my prescription has actually gotten better? The optometrist was very curious about that, had to ask if I'd made any "major lifestyle changes" & said that such a thing hardly ever happns

Neato!

When I first got into programming in high school, I happened to stumble across Steve Yegge's blog posts (at the time, still on the Wyvern domain). I found them fascinating and credit their formative influence on my getting into Lisps, Emacs, the power of learning new programming language, and the idea that ”fix it with more code" is a dangerous trap. It really makes me sad to see what he's become now and makes me all the more afraid to try to engage with LLMs, if this is what it does to people's brains.

Despite the weather, got out to dive today! Awesome wrecks, the City of Sheboygan and the Katie Eccles. Both gorgeous, the Eccles had still-intact jars of preserves on the deck!

Also a “fun” moment getting in the water when the strap for my dad’s phone camera housing broke and started sinking away; had to dive fast to retrieve it before it disappeared into 100ft+ of murky water😅

Lovely day of diving in Picton! Dove the China and the Annie Falconer wrecks. A bit choppy up top, everyone was a bit green around the gills, but great under the water. Forecast is thunderstorms all day tomorrow, so we’ll see how day two goes…🤞

Trying to write a serious app with SwiftUI is so depressing. It makes some straightforward things easy, but if you want to make something specific and different, have particular opinions about layout, you’re just SOL. A UI framework for the era of people not giving a shit, just slopping out stuff that’s only more-or-less what they want, and taking whatever dregs the handful of corporations that dictate everything deign to toss us

As I'm looking for work and hoping for an environment where I'm not flying solo anymore, I thought it would behoove me to do some brushing up on software development in teams -- perfect timing for @grimalkina 's fascinating book to arrive!

Hey Fediverse, I’m looking for full-time software development work, remotely or in-person in Toronto. I’ve been running my own company for with a friend for fifteen years, written lots of code in lots of languages; mostly Clojure for webdev, but also Swift for iOS apps; pretty much whatever needs doing. Looking for something with a bit more stability than the small business route as my life changes speed.
My resumé is here: https://occasionallycogent.com/James%20Cash%20CV.pdf Please let me know if you know of any good places for me! #getfedihired

Suggested slogan: “the shop for trans women to treat themselves”

Back from a family trip to Newfoundland. What a gorgeous place! Saw puffins, cetaceans (humpback, fin, and sperm whales, a bunch of dolphins), and so many beautiful landscapes

Some fucks put up signs on a telephone post outside High Park station advertising “the dominion society”, some nationalist anti-immigrant, “great replacement” BS organization. Those signs are gone now, but folks in the area, keep your eyes open for assholes and their leavings…

It’s been ten months since I admitted to myself I was trans, eleven weeks since I started HRT and I have never been so consistently happy with my life. I’m so, so glad I was able to realize this about myself and I hope everyone is able to become their true self ❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Happy Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️‍⚧️ I finally admitted to myself I am trans last year and it is amazing how much happier I am now. Every step I take along this journey has made me feel so much better than ever I thought was possible for me.

Thanks in particular to @christinelove for a tweet a decade ago that gave me my first “am I an egg?” thought and @phillmv for her essay that was sort of the straw that cracked my shell

I think pretzels are my favourite thing to bake. So easy, but feels like such a treat!

After running my own bootstrapped startup with a friend for fifteen years, I’m thinking it may be time to get a “real job”. Anyone know of openings in Toronto or remote for a very experienced dev? (I’m mostly a “full-stack” webdev in Clojure/Clojurescript+React, but I’ve done some of everything in my time) #getfedihired

I am retroactively so ashamed how foundational Steve Yegge's old writing was to me when I first got in to programming, not to mentioned how I recommended him to other people. What an decline for someone that used to seem to care about the tools they used and the quality of code they wrote.

@penaddict delightful typo in the member’s newsletter today, describing July as the “clam before the storm”. Very cute mental image 😅 Enjoy your holidays!

Alberta stuff is heinous, obviously, but it’s encouraging to me that Heather McPherson is already putting forth a petition for something actionable the federal government could do: http://www.heathermcpherson.ca/protect_trans_kids?recruiter_id=8504
I am increasingly looking forward to voting for her for NDP leader

Wearing dangling earrings for the first time and it feels so good!

Ontario is now a place where if you don’t own a house, you aren’t a real person. I hope Doug Ford fucking dies
