Not long ago, I wrote about the mass enshittification of big tech which has among many other things, made me start to rethink my relationship with the traditional platforms of the world and how I can wean myself from them. I’m referring to this movement as a “de-corporatization” effort and one that should A. mitigate fallout from said enshittification, B. probably save some money, and C. give me more control over my own data and capabilities.

Below, I have listed the current platform I use, an arrow (–>) and then the platform I intend to migrate to. In many cases, the new platforms are Fediverse-based, open source or self-hosted in some way. There are certainly more that I would like to transition away from and will likely do so in time.

Let me list out some reasons why moving away from these large platforms is beneficial…

  • Not controlled by billionaires. Billionaires aren’t good people, we should have learned by now not to trust them.
  • Not subject to enshittification, i.e. won’t lure you in with good features/functionality only to turn around and take those features away as part of a monetization effort.
  • “AI”. Basically every company wants to use AI to either serve you AI-driven crap and/or ingest your work to train their data models. No thanks.
  • As I mentioned before, probably cheaper.
  • This is especially true for social media but applies in other contexts –> Large platforms use algorithms and other logic to control what you see and what you don’t see. They will ragebait, suppress and facilitate all sorts of madness using this power.
  • Not subject to, or less likely to be taken over by one of said crazy billionaires.
