Spodek

I’m finishing up my latest trip to Poland for work. Our office is next to Spodek, which is an arena in Katowice. “Spodek” means “saucer” in English, and it’s shaped like a flying saucer. I love that it plays the musical tones from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

“An Uncomplicated Man”

Emily Wilson, who created a modern, well-received translation of The Odyssey, has an incredibly thorough review of the movie. While I liked the movie where she did not, I also enjoyed reading her take.

It almost goes without saying that The Odyssey will be up for Best Picture as well. That’s quite a feat for a retelling of a ~2,700 year old story, but Nolan pulled it off. Read my post for more of my thoughts.

Some of the tidbits here about how the movie was being made at the same time at the same studio as Attack of the Clones were interesting, especially given that Ewan McGregor starred in both.

I’m glad to see this kind of thing, and I hope—as the article indicates—that the other chains continue to invest in their large-format screens. In particular, I’d love to see more 70mm-capable IMAX screens. It’s one of the few things that gets me to go to the theater anymore.
