Quick Tip: Add Web Apps to Your Desktop with GNOME Web

5 May, 2026

Most of us use at least one web-based application or visit multiple online publications. Often several times a day. Using those applications means starting up a web browser, navigating to that application or publication, and then logging in.

What if you could start a web application in the same way that you can start up software installed on your computer? And do all of that without the distractions found in a browser window?

The GNOME Web browser makes doing that quick and easy. Let’s look at how.

Creating Your First Desktop Web App

Obviously, you’ll need to install Web on your computer. So let’s say you’ve done that. Fire up Web and go to a website. From there, click the stacker menu on the right side of the browser’s header bar and select Web Apps > Install as Web App.

A screen like the one below displays:

Type a descriptive name in the field — for example, Markdown Table Creator — and then click Create.

After a few seconds, a shortcut to launch the web app displays in your desktop’s application menu. Here’s what that looks like in Ubuntu:

And here’s what a web app looks like when you launch it:

Getting Rid of a Web App

To do that, click the stacker menu and select Web Apps > Manage Web Apps. A tab like the one below opens in Web:

Deleting a web app created with GNOME web

Click Delete then, on the message that displays, click Delete again. After a moment or two, the shortcut to the app is removed from the application menu.
