Let’s get the ball rolling!

News from OddBird Open Source

Updates on our activities and progress.

About

We love contributing to the languages (CSS, Sass, Python) and OSS tools like Django that we rely on every day as designers and developers. We even have a few of our own (free and open) tools that we hope will be useful to others. Your sponsorship will allow us to sustain that work, spending more of our time fixing bugs and improving the languages and tools listed below. It's an honor being part of this open community, and we really appreciate any contributions, big or small. ✨

Core Contributors

W3C
Developing specifications for the CSS language, from new features to long-time pain points

  • Open research, explainers, and proposals are at css.oddbird.net
  • Miriam co-authors Container Queries, Cascade Layers, Scope, and other popular features
  • We're currently working on improvements to responsive typography, grids, and CSS-native mixin/functions

Along the way, we've started and maintain a number of powerful CSS polyfills:

Sass
Extending the language, the javascript API, and the documentation website

  • We wrote the proposals for wide-gamut colors, a package import syntax, and the string.split() function
  • We've been implementing a number of features in the JS api, including those listed above
  • Sass Language Playground

CSSRemedy
Addressing the technical debt of CSS
CSS Remedy provides a modern proposal for how CSS should work by default. Browsers are limited on how far they can improve default styles, but you don’t have to stay in the past.Django
Python web framework
Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. Built by experienced developers, it takes care of much of the hassle of Web development, so you can focus on writing your app without needing to reinvent the wheel.

OddTools

OddContrast
Color contrast checker with Oklch, Oklab, P3, and more
OddContrast is a color format converter, featuring newer color formats like Oklch, Oklab, and the Display P3 color space. It’s also a color contrast checker to help designers meet WCAG 2 accessibility standards.Cascading Colors
Dynamic & interactive color palettes using CSS
Generate dynamic and interactive color palettes. Define custom themes with CSS custom properties, allow user-adjustments with a bit of light-weight JS, and customize the underlying system with Sass.

Accoutrement
Integrated design-system management in Sass
OddBird’s Accoutrement tools help keep design tokens meaningful to both humans and machines – opening the door for automation, while improving readability.True
Unit-testing for Sass developers
True is the only full-featured unit-testing framework designed specifically for the Sass language. Write your tests in Sass, compile them with Sass, and then (optionally) pass the results to a Javascript test-runner for command-line control and reporting.

Susy
(2009–2020)
CSS layout framework
For over a decade, design engineers relied heavily on 'grid farmeworks' to simplify the math of responsive grid-based layouts. Susy became one of the primary tools for doing that in a way that would be light-weight, flexible, and non-invasive. The project is now end-of-life, but we're proud of the work we did.
