We map the effort to eliminate child mortality at the district level across 99 low- and middle-income countries, tracking 123 million child deaths between 2000 and 2017. While substantial progress has been made across nearly all countries, we found that 58% of deaths during this time could have been averted in the absence of within-country inequality.
I led a team that mapped child mortality by district across 123 low- and middle-income countries from 2000 through 2017. The decline in child mortality during this time is a story of quiet success, but many countries still suffer from substantial in-country inequalities. This work received substantial press coverage and was presented on the floor of the UN General Assembly. (1133 words)
