About

Elm is a functional programming language that compiles to JavaScript, and it offers something React can't: zero runtime exceptions, guaranteed. No null pointer errors. No "undefined is not a function". If your Elm code compiles, it works.

This book is your practical guide from React to Elm. Written by a staff developer while working in a production codebase with 150,000+ lines of Elm, it shows you side-by-side comparisons, real-world patterns, and honest trade-offs. You'll see familiar React patterns translated to Elm's approach—state management, side effects, component architecture—and understand why Elm makes certain choices.

But here's the real value: Even if you never use Elm professionally, learning it will make you a better developer in any language. Elm is the fastest way to truly learn functional programming—not watered-down FP patterns, but real, uncompromising functional thinking. It's stricter than TypeScript, simpler than Haskell, and more practical than academic theory.

What you'll learn:

  • The Elm Architecture (TEA)—the pattern that inspired Redux
  • How compile-time guarantees prevent entire classes of bugs
  • Pure functions, immutability, and explicit effects—FP concepts that transfer everywhere
  • When to choose Elm (and when not to)
  • How to integrate Elm widgets into existing React applications
  • Real patterns from production codebases at scale

Who this book is for:

  • React developers curious about functional programming
  • Teams dealing with production bugs despite TypeScript
  • Developers tired of debugging state management issues
  • Anyone who wants to level up their programming skills

Your React knowledge is your advantage here. If you understand reducers and immutability patterns, you're already halfway to Elm. This book meets you where you are and shows you what's possible with different trade-offs.

Whether you adopt Elm or not, you'll come away with insights that make you better at React, TypeScript, and any language where clarity matters.

Author

Christian Ekrem

I'm a Staff Engineer with over 12 years of experience building production systems. My recommendations in this book are battle-tested in one of the world's largest Elm codebases -- over 150,000 lines of production code at Lovdata, Norway's leading legal information provider.

Before Lovdata, I spent six years at Vipps MobilePay (Norway's leading mobile payment platform) working across full-stack development in Go and React, Android development in Kotlin, and eventually becoming their first engineer to work across all three fields simultaneously. That range of experience shapes my sense of what actually makes code maintainable.

I've also taught at a special-needs high school and worked as a film director. Both of those taught me how to explain things clearly and meet people where they are -- which is exactly what my book aims to do for React developers learning Elm. You can read my dev blog @ cekrem.github.io

Testimonials

  • A clear, well-paced introduction to Elm for React developers. Christian teaches one concept at a time without overwhelming the reader, and the writing is easy to follow throughout. A great starting point for anyone Elm-curious.

    Dwayne Crooks

independent software developer and creator of Elm with Dwayne

  • Frontend architecture is notoriously hard to get right. React will let you build anything, including a mess. This book gives you a guide through that chaos — a paradigm so coherent that even if you never write a line of Elm professionally, the way you think about your work will be permanently upgraded.

    Khalil Stemmler

author of Solidbook and founder of The Software Essentialist

  • I would recommend this book to developers who have mainly worked with React and TypeScript and want to explore a new language through Elm. Reading this book gave me many helpful ideas and philosophies for writing more robust and reliable programs.

    Seungwan Yu

    Frontend developer at Toss Place

  • A great read for anyone wanting to dive into functional programming, full of the same easy-to-follow writing and examples readers of Christian’s blog will already know and appreciate. Even if you never use Elm in production, An Elm Primer for React Developers will show you the beauty of constraints. Whatever you do next, you’ll walk away with a new mental model for writing cleaner functional code — independent of languages or frameworks.
