NeoMutt

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks

NeoMutt is a powerful, highly configurable command-line email client. It is a fork of Mutt with added features, built for people who want to manage email efficiently from the keyboard.

With key bindings and macros, threaded conversations, regular-expression searches, and a rich pattern language for selecting messages, NeoMutt can be shaped around your workflow instead of the other way around.

Get started

  1. Install NeoMutt using your operating system's package manager. See the download and distribution instructions.
  2. Connect your email account. The NeoMutt Guide has beginner-friendly tutorials and setup help for Gmail, Microsoft 365, other IMAP providers, and local mailboxes.
  3. Make it yours. Explore the complete configuration reference, browse colour themes, and share useful additions in neomutt-contrib.

Why NeoMutt?

  • Keyboard-first: read, search, organize, and compose without leaving the terminal.
  • Deeply configurable: customize keys, colours, hooks, macros, views, and account behaviour.
  • Powerful mail handling: navigate threads and select groups of messages with precise searches and patterns.
  • Open and community-driven: NeoMutt is free software developed in the open by users and contributors.
