Followup on #1314, should ideally be merged only once the actual upgrade is deployed successfully.

I merged #1314 a few minutes ago and I'll get it deployed before I merge this down. If you have a chance, could you rebase? There's the build fixes that got handled elsewhere, and I've touched the Gemfile dependencies (though that doesn't seem to have conflicted here).
