Thinking Like a Mountain
Many years ago, I took some photos in a remote region of the Gila Wilderness Area. One of those photographs made it into a book about Aldo Leopold, the environmental scientist who championed its preservation in the 1920s. I was glad to learn more about his influence on ecology and conservation, which had been woefully missing from my biology curriculum at the time.
The Smithsonian magazine has published a nice piece about Leopold for its 2026 summer edition. It includes the story of how a dying wolf changed his perspective on nature forever. I encourage you to explore some of his essays and those of the other influential conservationists listed at the end of the report.
