Rust in Action - Applications of Computer Vision and Control

About

It’s one thing doing things in theory - it’s a totally different ballgame to do them in action. In this workshop, you’ll be combining computer vision, control theory, and a healthy dosage of Rust, to play a Helsing-edition of Simon-says, using real cameras and vehicles!

Every 30 seconds, the server will issue a new command - who can get their vehicle into the targeted quadrant the fastest?

Format

1. Meet your crew

We’ll divide participants into teams of 3-4 people.
2. Grab your wheels

Each team will receive their own vehicle and details on how to connect to it.
3. Kickstart your code

We’ll be providing a simple Rust SDK to help people ramp up faster.
4. Start your engines

Over the course of 3-4 hours, you’ll be figuring out how to control your vehicle, visualise it through the camera systems, and finally - start racing for the target!

Mentor

Alex Read

Alex is a Deployed AI Engineer at Helsing, working on Lura, Helsing's AI-powered acoustic analysis and anti-submarine warfare capability, and helping build SG-1, Helsing's first underwater glider.

Previously the founding engineer at an AI legal-tech startup, and before that building backend systems for a drone-based IMSI catcher, Alex's first encounter with Rust came while building out a RAG pipeline for the startup's AI agent. Since joining Helsing, it has become his daily driver, and he enjoys deepening his expertise by tinkering on projects in his own time.
