I code and do some research on character animation and control.
I am currently a first-year PhD student in Computer Graphics at SFU, advised by Prof. Xue Bin (Jason) Peng. Previously, I was a research intern at Epic Games advised by Daniel Holden. I completed my M.Sc. advised by Prof. Michiel van de Panne, and my B.Sc. in CS and Statistics at UBC.

Control Operators for Interactive Character Animation
Ruiyu Gou, Michiel van de Panne, Daniel Holden ACM Transactions on Graphics (TOG) (Proc. SIGGRAPH Asia 2025) Best Paper Award pdf / page / video / ref code We introduce Control Operators, a way of encoding arbitrary inputs to neural networks, making building ML-based animation controllers accessible, even for non-technical users. 动画人不骗动画人,好训好用 :P |

Learning Temporal Action Chunking for Motor Control
MSc Thesis, 2024 pdf / slides Can we control a humanoid to perform a stepping stone task with policy only queried at 10hz? This thesis explores the idea of temporal action chunking, an state-and-time-indexed reformulation of reinforcement learning policies. |

PartwiseMPC: Interactive Control of Contact-Guided Motions
Niloofar Khoshsiyar, Ruiyu Gou, Tianhong Zhou, Sheldon Andrews, Michiel van de Panne 2024 ACM SIGGRAPH/EG Symposium on Computer Animation (SCA 2024) Best Paper Presentation Honourable Mention project page / pdf We learn a factored form of model predictive control to enable controlling complex contact-guided motions interacting with the environment. |

Learning to Get Up
Tianxin Tao, Matthew Wilson, Ruiyu Gou, Michiel van de Panne ACM SIGGRAPH 2022 project page / pdf We show that a pure reward-driven reinforcement learning approach with a strong-to-weak curriculum can learn to get up naturally from a wide range of fallen states, without motion capture data. |
