romi’s review published on Letterboxd:
A stream of grotesque scenes carried by a fantastic writing.
The protocol broke, so they had to break theirs to get a procedural execution, which is not only the premise of the film, but also a recurrent cause of absurd chains of events.
Death by Hanging felt like a dark version of a 70s french comedy, with all the theatrical power that it implies. The film deals very well with its point, so I’m not going to spend time explaining what it literally says on the tin, but I’ll also add that it perfectly convey its message about race, imperialism and the denial of blame by a call of duty. All points it made felt real.
The end of the film was something I did not really expect, and what a closure.
The film got noisy, so I’ll need a rewatch to process everything.
