Some of us should never get on a bike
Yesterday I was driving through a national park. The speed limit is low because cars and cyclists share the road. At times there are horses and carriages for the tourists. Most individuals are very good at sharing and if you live in this city you are used to all this activity in the park. We learn to be patient and take our time to get through the park if you are driving.
I got to a section of the park where a family was trying to cross the road at the same time a group of cyclists were on the other side. Cars are driving through slowly but it wasn't a safe spot to cross for this family, it was a curved road. On top of this one of the cyclists was not experienced at riding a bike. They couldn't balance themselves and were weaving all over one of the lanes. I found it strange the other cyclists part of this group were just standing around not helping this individual.
The entire situation was not safe. If it was me in that family, I would not cross near a curved road. Just walk to a safer location. If I was that cyclist, I would at least be aware of my surroundings and move out of the way. At least get off the bike and walk until it was a safe spot to get back on.
Perhaps because I'm a car driver, I'm more aware of how other drivers think (or don't think). When I am a pedestrian, I always pay attention to my surroundings around traffic. When I bike, even more so as I'm sharing the road. I don't know what is happening in our society that common sense is lost. People seem to expect that others should be the ones who need to take care around them and not both ways. I'm not surprised that we have accidents every day involving pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in this city.
