Hyperlink Roundup 02
After a long week of work, new iPhone's and other Apple products to forget about, here's a new Hyperlink Roundup to make you forget all that. It's a collection of interesting links to stories I read from all over the internet the past two weeks.
A gentle introduction to CP/M
I mean, come on, why not read up on an old operating system. Make some coffee and sit back for a long read. Just because it's a "gentle" introduction, doesn't mean it's gonna be a short read.
Microsoft’s 6502 BASIC is now Open Source
I didn't believe the headline either but it's a cold day in hell I guess. I learned BASIC in high school and it was a favorite programming language of mine. I even named this blog after it. Microsoft opened the hatch and officially released the code under an open-source license. Grab it before they change their minds.
All 54 lost clickwheel iPod games have now been preserved for posterity
I haven't had time to install these on my iPod, I forgot about these games that I used to play back in the day along with Dope Wars on my PalmPilot. Those basic games were a great way to past time.
Exiting the Mac
Found this as I was reading about the new Linux distro Omarchy. The documentation is very good and the creator who goes by DHH, co-founder of BaseCamp and others, documents his process of leaving Apple. I thought it was an interesting option for those who would like to leave behind the Apple ecosystem.
Sega Rally 2 ~ 25th Anniversary Edition Repack
Sega Rally was my favourite game on the Sega Saturn. I was the only one crazy enough to buy one back in the day but I loved driving that Toyota Celica. This is version 2 which I didn't know about. It is designed for Windows 10 and 11. Grab that old Win10 laptop that won't see any updates after next month and make it a gaming console. Even if it's this one game.
Gopher, A Simple Alternative To The Bloatware Of The Web
Tired of the current internet and wish for the past? Here is another blog post about Gopher, the simpler web. Not alot of people use it but that's the point, no? Good read.
The NTATV Project: Bringing Windows NT (Windows XP, Windows 2003, ReactOS) to the original Apple TV
If you have an original AppleTV (I'm sure you do, I do) this is an interesting project for installing Windows on it. This model was close to a computer back then, not too powerful but easily hackable.
More BASIC
A video on the birth of BASIC, Professors John Kemeny and Tom Kurtz along with a band of Dartmouth undergraduates invent the Basic computer language.
VECTREX MINI
From the website, the Vectrex Mini brings the spirit of the original console into a modern and smaller form while keeping its iconic gameplay alive. I don't recall this when it came out back in 1982, I was a kid still and probably still playing with my Atari. There is a kickstarter for the mini version if you're interested. Seems just like the old Commodore, Atari and other mini consoles, these products keep making a comeback.
BYTE, a visual archive
Want to see something cool? How about every scanned BYTE magazine in a visual archive. You got to experience it to believe it.
I Love Reading 1980s Computer Magazines, and So Should You
I enjoy reading old computer magazines and this article was a nice surprise. Original article was paywalled so here is a link from archive today.
