Dying technology and what to do about it
Every couple of months I need to recharge my outside cameras. It is annoying but expected as batteries degrade over time. Temperatures in the weather from hot to cold affect the batteries too.
My system is local and I don't use the cloud or pay for any subscriptions. But even then, I think when these cameras completely die and need to be recycled, I won't be buying anything new. It got me thinking about my tech products overall when batteries eventually cannot be charged.
My wife uses a very old iPhone with a battery that only holds around 75% of its original charge. She never complains and just plugs it in when she needs to.
I have a drawer full of old tech and I've tried to sell them online but seems no one is interested in old tech these days. I think it's a small niche group of nostalgic nerds like me who care about this stuff. Perhaps as new tech becomes expensive and consumers stop buying, maybe the market for used items will grow? Who knows?
I've decided to use what I have and have no interest in new tech. Before the price adjustments news I had already been forced into this decision due to work and life conditions. Spending time offline made me realize I don't need to be online with the latest tech too.
I think as a society we need to be thoughtful of e-waste and using what we have for as long as these products last.
